humanistic play therapy

“Play is a child’s natural medium for self-expression”

— Virginia Axline.

Humanistic Play Therapy is a child-centred, non-directive approach that supports children’s social, emotional and psychological wellbeing. The child can take the lead in the playroom, and with the support of the play therapist they may begin to explore and express their internal world, their needs, challenges and hopes. They are able to guide the pace and intensity of the therapeutic process which leads to positive change and growth.

The play therapist's role is to support the child to feel safe, seen and accepted in the sessions. She will use therapeutic skills to show the child they are present with them, they accept them as they are and that their big feelings are being held.

who is humanistic play therapy for?

Humanistic Play Therapy is generally suitable for children aged 3 to 13 years old. It can be beneficial for children with a range of challenges and experiences including:

  • trauma

  • grief and loss

  • anxiety and depression

  • ADHD

  • social difficulties

  • difficulties with self-esteem

  • fears and phobias

  • toileting issues

  • difficulties regulating emotions, and more.

what can my child expect in a session?

The sessions will take place in a private room so your child is able to express themselves freely.

There will be a range of toys for children to play with including messy and sensory toys, imaginative play toys and dress ups, games with rules, arts and crafts, a sandtray, dolls and teddies and puppets.

Your child can play almost any way they like in the playroom. They will lead the play in the sessions and the play therapist will support them to feel safe and valued.

“When you focus on the problem, you lose sight of the child.”

- Garry Landreth
